Personal Experience on How Education has been Shaped by Media Resources.

Image
This article was written by Chethana Mediwaka  A few years ago, I started teaching English to secondary grade students. In the beginning, I was enjoying a traditional in-person classroom and demonstrating lessons using chalk and the blackboard. I was happy about my method of teaching and the learning background of my classroom, as I observed how students participated actively and orally in my lessons. But recently, the administration of my school introduced digital teaching tools such as smart boards, computers and virtual classrooms to enhance the teaching and learning process of the school. Also, all the teachers were given support for their IT knowledge in the school. Since then, I have started using technology in my teaching through projectors, CPU’s and tablets. This procedure allowed my students to access online resources such as videos, audios and some other electronic media. On the other hand, advanced technology in education allowed students to submit completed tasks...

Balancing Technology with Traditional Teaching Methods

Image
This article was written by Vinuri Herath   The new generation of students is welcoming the new era of education. Here, digital tools are a huge part of learning. However, while tech offers various benefits, it is important not to forget the value of old-school teaching. Hence, blended learning helps to mix online and in-person teaching. This method allows teachers to use technology to make lessons more interesting while giving a significant place for classroom teaching. The reason for promoting the blended learning method is that technology doesn’t fit every lesson. Sometimes, the best way to learn some lessons is the traditional method of teaching and learning because this approach allows students to connect in person with their teachers. When teachers can choose the use of technology, it creates a place where they can try new things in teaching and improve learning. Also, when integrating technology with teaching, both teachers and students should be allowed to wo...

Improvement in Teaching Via Social Media Platforms

Image
This article was written by Kavindiya Rambukwella Around half of the world's population uses social media to share news, find communities and build social networks. With the integration of technology, most of the students engage in social media to share their daily updates. Teachers can use social media for education purposes, such as arranging group projects, sharing resources, and communicating with students who are outside of class. As a place, a school can also use social media for the purposes of sharing school news, promoting academic and extra-curricular events and sending out emergency messages regarding students.                        Facebook can be used to organize specific projects, facilitate real-time discussion and Facebook Live, which help teachers to conduct virtual lessons, online stream lectures and Q&A sessions since Facebook is open for everyone, as an adm...

Role of Traditional and Modern Media Resources in Teaching

Image
Traditional education can be defined as the transmission of knowledge by a teacher to a group of students who are the recipients of the knowledge. The typical schooling system under traditional education mainly focuses on reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. Here, teachers and students use fewer media resources while mainly using books. Yet modern methodology in teaching, in contrast to traditional teaching methods, is more student-centered. In that context, the students are allowed to work at their own pace, encouraged to participate, interact communicate in the classroom and outside.                      In the traditional teaching process, the teacher opens, conducts, and closes a lesson within the structure of a lecture. The students can witness a few media resources such as blackboards, a few charts and textbooks. These media resources are mostly static...

Advantages of ICT in Education

Image
The use of informational communication technology is a unique symbol of a new era in education. Even though ICT changes human thinking patterns, it enhances existing educational models and creates new training methods. These new models pave a way for learners to play an active role in the education system and promote an independent, self-directed, flexible and interactive learning process. In such a situation, a new aspect of education has been created, which is called e-learning. This method moves the education from content and teacher-centered education to competency-based, student-centered education. In this regard, ICT has effectively created advantages in education while opening gates for e-learning possibilities.                      Information and communication technologies consist of hardware, software, network and media for collecting, storing, processing, transmitting ...

Understanding the Relevance of Media Resources in Higher Education

Image
Due to ongoing digitalization, new possibilities have emerged for the delivery of education. It provides students with more efficient and convenient methods to achieve their learning goals. Over the past few years, with the impact of lockdowns due to COVID-19, these digital applications have often transitioned from the classroom and rapidly expanded into higher education.   Before the advancement of technology, the teaching and learning process in higher education was mainly based on person-to-person interaction. Yet, with the digitalization, several digital platforms emerged, such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, that introduced distance teaching and learning methods, which made the learning process easier and smoother. Further online classrooms such as Google Classroom make a space to virtually create classroom interactions such as assignments, quizzes and essays.                 ...

Specific Multimedia Formats and Their Applications in Teaching

The word ‘multimedia’ generally defines any programme or activity that presents ideas through a variety of media or forms. Multimedia teaching is a process of teaching using different multimedia resources and instructional techniques in a classroom or other similar contexts.   This kind of education allows students to visualize the facts in their books in real life. For example, if a teacher wants to teach about Egyptian Civilization, she can picture the Egyptian culture, their architecture and politics through a single video clip. This relationship between technology and teaching has effectively been established because technological advancement frequently creates different media simpler and more affordable for teachers. Modern smartboards and digital projectors are fine examples that enable teachers to type their work and show it for the whole class.           ...
